My Black is Beautiful

by Kristie Kennedy

My black is beautiful
My black is powerful
My black is more exquisite
than a pink diamond
Nestled in the Amazon

No matter your shade,
Be it:
Almond, butter or mahogany
We are all covered by grace
Proudly showcase
the brilliant hue of you
No need to be morbidly blue
moca, coffee and chocolate too
Wonderful work of art
from finish to start
God be praised for the
extraordinary creation He made

My black is beautiful
My black is powerful
My black is more exquisite
than a pink diamond
Nestled in the Amazon

Intricate tapestry of His glorious Majesty
Midnight, caramel and smoldering charcoal,
Confident enough to fly solo
Sun kissed bronze, licorice and cocoa
Until a new image is revealed
Old wounds remain unhealed
Step forward and take center stage,
Fear is a defeated opponent
This is your moment,
courageously own it!

My black is beautiful
My black is powerful
My black is more exquisite
than a pink diamond
Nestled in the Amazon

Hold up the mirror,
How can I be any clearer?
Inside your mind greatness resides
Delve deeper beneath the cerebral cortex
to discover intellectual prowess
Laced with finesse
Impenetrable fortress
 command and impress
Robed in magnificence,
Stop bowing to anything less!

My black is beautiful
My black is powerful
My black is more exquisite
than a pink diamond
Nestled in the Amazon

Bodacious Bella,
Always remember,
Your color is spectacular
Emerge from dark shadows
Razzle and Dazzle!
Valuable treasure of infinite worth
Refuse to be silent or violent,
ILLUSTRIOUS bouquet
The King's masterpiece,
Stand up and be proud
Let greatness resound!

My black is beautiful
My black is powerful
My black is more exquisite
than a pink diamond
Nestled in the Amazon

Pecan tan and Ebony brown skin
No matter what the challenge,
Contrary to popular opinion
You were destined to win!
What shall we voice to critical naysayers,
Does my strength catch you by surprise?
Maya Angelou coined it best,
like ashes from the dust
Still I rise!

My black is beautiful
My black is powerful
My black is more exquisite
than a pink diamond
Nestled in the Amazon

One final lesson,
in this lyrical juxtapose
Our history is not our destiny
slavery has skewed our mentality
be not deceived by sensationalized media
promoting that which is controversial
to keep you and I adversarial
there is no honor among women slinging dirt
Seeking identity in the name of a purse!

Our black is beautiful
Our black is powerful
Our black is more exquisite
Than a pink diamond
Nestled in the Amazon

Hearts filled with envy,
conceiving ancestral blasphemy!
When will it ever end?
REALITY SHOWS TRITE AND TRIVIAL
CONSTANT COMPARISONS,
Who's a one and who's a ten?
Instead of celebrating our beauty,
we build up walls of disunity!

Our black is beautiful
Our black is powerful
Our black is more exquisite
Than a pink diamond
Nestled in the Amazon
