The Shadow

by Kristy L. Brewer

I know everything about you.
I have been with you since the day you were born.
I walk with you daily.
I dance as you dance.

I have never left you lonely,
But you look down on me because I am beneath your feet.
You walk on me, spit on me,
Never recognize me for what I am.

I know who lurks beside me.
I see him watching you,
Waiting for the moment to devour you.
But he is not I, and I am not him.

I know whose image you were crafted in, but me,
I was not worthy enough to receive a soul.
Look at me, I have no image.
I am left to lurk in the dark.

As we move in unison, I pretend that we are one and the same.
I know that my time with you will end when
you lie down for the last time.
I know that he will come for your soul and not your body.

That is the day you will leave me there in the grave.
I know that heaven has no place for me.
For I
Am only your shadow.
