Black Teacher

by Grace C. Joyner

She the young teacher was new
The students attentive as if in pews
"Are you half-Spanish," one did ask
"Or half-Indian," as another grasped
She replied, "Both my parents are Black."
"How did you get it like that, your good hair,"
"And you have an accent that's a little queer."
She patted her kink fried
And dove deeper into ancestral pride
"All four of my grandparents were Black,
So Black am I."
And whether you are or are not,
Never lie.
