Black Girl

by Grace Craven Joyner

Black girl across meadows
Black girl across streets
Being everywhere
From ebonies to wheats.
Black girl without you
No flowers and the trees
Your men tended them
Made them grow, you see.
Black girl I ask
Is your conscious in tow
The world is learning
Now you know.
Black girl, you're terrific
But you just sigh
You were timid like me
Black girl like I.
