From Across The Room

by Jhori Barksdale

From across the room I saw something in you
that eyes don’t very often see
And it still caresses my soul to hear you say
that your eyes too saw the same thing
when they first looked at me
So long have I been longing to hear you speak my name
Still feel the chill from the thrill
of you saying you too have been
feeling the same thing
How many times have I passed by
Looking out the corner of my eye
Too shy to say hi
Hoping and wishing and praying
You knew what was going through my mind
Both of us wasting precious time
Too afraid to cross that invisible line
Wanting something that seemingly was out of touch
Expecting too much but really not enough
From across the room
I’d watch you each and every day
Often going out of my way
Although I couldn’t think of one single word to say
Caressed your face with my eyes
Told myself lies
That you were not the reason that I just had to walk by
From across the room
Everyday I’d consume you in with one quick glance
Damn
The essence of a beautiful black man
And then one day
You caught me by surprised
Gave truth to my lies
When you walked up and simply said hi
Didn’t know what to say or do
But I did know that I was really diggin you
And now that you’re here on the same side of the room as I
My eyes tend to crinkle up a little more often at the sides
No longer straining to watch you from across the room
Got you right here next to me smiling from the joy
of the future that’s in bloom
