In the Dark

by John D. Evans

My ankles are bound

I am asleep

Though open, my eyes are closed

I cannot move

All I can do is feel and see

My cousin looking up at me

Kneeling at my feet

So I feel safe

I am free

To watch in disbelief

A young man thrown

Onto his stomach fully exposed

With a hungry pack peering

And he yells

I cannot hear him

But I know that he is crying
