Burning Ends

by John D. Evans

I saw the fire

And walked right into it

The flames of ugliness burned me

But I continued to press my way into it

The flames grabbed me

Every time I spoke and was ignored

The flames slammed me

Every time I tried to be nice to it

The flames cursed me

Every time I leaked peace

The flames denied me

Of my dignity

They needed me

But treated me

Like a candle

Almost gone
