First Impressions

by Nick Grooms

Pupils strung together

by sparkle

and loose ends

with perfect circles vaugely mentioned

by the beauty

tracing the sockets

of your eyes

that a sight

such as this

may never plug into

Unexpected

question the answer

daily on the hour

thinking of a proposal

i can make

with my eyelids

rather than

letting my jaws

unhinge

letting embarrassment out

Something more

is the hope

my worried eyes

glued to white walls

running short on time

as the clock

ticks me off

painting a picture

of you

in my head

never getting the smile

as perfect as you do

Your arms resilient

to embrace

everything that is yet to come

this slow passing day

a reminder of you

a memoir of sorts

of what you cant get over

in every aspect

i'll keep you

at arms length

while you avoid

the thought

of arms open.
