Requiem for Brenda (Fassy)

by Frieda Groffy

Once upon a time there was
a little township girl
with a nice voice and big dreams
but dreams conquered too fast
can become life's nightmares instead
the slow poison of the glitter and glamour
a mask to hide the scars
a masquerade of attitudes
the good girl, the bad girl
the bitchy and the mean one
the Queen of Kwaito, the Fallen Angel
the booze and the drugs
the euphoric, psychedelic flashes
the cry out for real love
absorbed, consumed in to much
just sex in both ways
the pain piling up, inside and outside
no time left to heal
speeding up the speed limit
crossing all boundaries
the 'grande finale' staged in an hospital bed
back to the vulnerable
little township girl
the Paradise Lost
but mourned by the thousands
the Icon may stand for ever and a day
