Mr. Soul Man

by Barbara Evelyn

You think you have it like that
You think you can just call me up and come over
And run through me.
That was once upon a time.
That was when I was green,
When I was unenlightened
And thought you were a king.
But I saw through you
I realized that lust was not love
And then you were not attractive to me.
Then you became human
You were just like any other body
Without a soul.
Now you can't do it for me
You don't turn me on
You are just a mouth spouting words.
You have no soul.
You are just a self centered boy
Not a whole man
You can't touch me
Although you think you can.
You use smooth words
But they are empty, a ploy
They just prove to me that you are less man, more boy.
You are without a soul.
Your emotions are shallow
There is no substance
You just use your looks to get your way
But you can't touch me
Your selfishness will make you rue the day.
You are selfish, greedy, thoughtless
Unwhole,
A black man without a soul.
