One For The Road

by Barbara Evelyn

I never saw a thirsty road except one that needed rain
To flush debris away and make it clean again.
I never saw a road’s mouth opening and closing
As it grasped alcohol in a bottle or a glass.
I never heard a road speak
Warning you that that drink would be your last.
I never heard it say it caused you to take a life
Or to create a catastrophe and caused a lot of strife.
That’s because a road is just a path, winding or short
It can lead you safely home or to the destination
That you should safely continue on
So my friends try to be responsible
Know that a road never needs a drink.
So when you want to reach across that table or bar
Don’t share anything with the road. Stop and just think.
Call a designated driver or someone that you trust
We will all appreciate it and no more lives will be carelessly lost.
