Golden Years

by Michael Finley

golden years
I knew the golden years couldn’t
just wouldn’t last
way back when --
when my embryo had eyes
and integration was still a thought in the mind
of some progressive, can’t leave well enough alone
civil rights gurus
but we always want what we don’t have
and now we realize that the madness of segregation
really wasn’t all that bad
when you consider the results
of the right to vote
and all them civil rights we have now
brotha’s on the corner still ain’t got no edumucation
and lynchin’ rope been traded for a baton
still get no respect
for my dark pigment
so what was this for again
fool’s gold and the right to play in your game
I knew the golden years couldn’t
just wouldn’t last
way back when --
when my embryo had eyes
