Seeing Through a Glass Darkly

by Marilyn S. Ferrell

A heavy weight is cast into sphere
of aspiration,
doggedly trying to cripple (and shear)
those who try to make it
to the finish line (rather they'd cower).

A noose is cast onto the neck
of morale
of the everyday Joe (in disrespect)
whose sole desire is to
garner the benefits of his labor (he's least).

He mustn't be slighted by cynicism's brew.
                       He must feed his hunger.
	                      Or else, he WILL implode.

* A response to Langston Hughes' "Harlem".
