The Day of Plague

by Farasi

     Lauds
The plague came silently.
People suddenly talking
Of someone dying.

     Terce
We can only pray
About what we cannot see
That keeps on killing.

     Sext
The black, the poor go
First in line for this evil.
They have to work to eat.

     None
We prayed for deliverance.
Are we still in Egypt?
Where is the Promised Land?

     Vespers
Lower the box;
Ring the bell in the evening.
We won’t forget her.

     Compline
The darkness is waiting.
We’re afraid of sleep and dreaming.
When will we awaken?
