The Burning Light

by Dianna (Martin) Wilson

Beyond the hill so high above sat a burning light
It glowed and glistened in the dark as many took their flight
No face was seen by anyone while watching from afar
for he who held the lantern sat beyond the shining star

While in the cloak of darkness, stealthily they made their way
feet were aching, backs in pain, yet from the rocky path they dared not to stray

For just ahead around the bend, the captain's ship did wait
if but a foot could touch the deck
they knew it would seal their fate

So all tired and weary eyes were focussed straight ahead
as the burning light beyond the hill paved the way to freedom's precious bread
