Do My Eyes Deceive Me?

by Dennis L. Nelson

They say beauty is in the eyes of the beholder
But what if you were blind?
What if someone sold you their model
before you were able to create your own design
What if the images of black women in movies and videos
were replaced with the sizes and shades of your mother?
Would you look at that woman and still love her?
Or would you be color-blind?

Would you make is rain even if she didn’t drop it low?
Could you still find her sexy if her response
to letting you taste her cake was “NO”.
Would she still glow if the lights stayed on?
What if her flavor of the night was intimate conversation?
Could you still perform?

You see I learned what a woman is from a woman
I learn what beauty is from a woman
I’ve been exposed to the true essence of a Black Woman
So I can distinguish a “Bitty” from a Black Woman
I’ll take a throwback Sheba before a modern day diva any day.
