Modern Maturity: Independence

by Deidra Suwanee Dees

deep
lines
in her face,
she braces herself on her cane,

one
loose shoelace,
she stands
hunched over in the rain,

brown
life-scarred
skin,
she’s trying to look both ways,

mud
splashes on her
stocking chin
by a taxi howling through haze,

fading
sight,
she’s not
looking for any remarkable feat,

alone at the
light,
Grandma Bell
struggles trying to cross the street
