Black History

Remember me?
I’m your Black History!
I’m that drug dealer with bleach white Uptown’s on my feet
Pockets swoll like arthritic feet in the heat
Side arm loaded, ready to cock at a moment’s notice
Remember me?
I’m your Black History!
I’m your Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, slave ship survivor
Self-educated, single mother, sole income provider
Working three jobs to make ends meet
Do you, do you remember me?
I’m your Black History!
I’m that 10-yr. old that never made it to grade 6
Gunned down in the streets over some bullshit
Remember me, remember me?
I’m your Black History!
I’m that street poet begging for one Mic
Staring up at the ceiling before I go to sleep at night
Wishing that one day…one day I’ll make it out the hood
Get a record deal, “Damn, everything’ll be all good”
You see, I’m your Black History
I’m that lesson taught left out of textbooks in school
That calculus problem that makes you feel like a fool
The reason why you cut class to hang outside the school
Do you…do you remember me?
I’m your Black History
I’m the Black Holocaust reparations you will never get
I’m the Section 8 housing you and your man live at
I’m that eviction notice taped to the front door
The formula and diapers you don’t have money for
I’m that high school graduate with aspirations of college
That enlisted in the Army because mommy and daddy couldn’t afford it
Do you…do you remember me?
I’m your Black History!
