Affirmations Of A Black Woman

by Cherise "Reese" Charleswell

Go ahead and try to deny me
what is already mine
believe if you will
that I have only occupied this present
Place & Time
believe that you know my truths
my hidden secrets
and I will continue to see
only a fool when I look upon you

Attempt to define me
categorize me
dissect my body
with your eyes
and try to pry
open my soul
try -- if you are so bold
to unlock my secrets
just so you could attempt to
replace them with your white lies and bulls*t
steal from me
and act as if I never had ownership
never had wisdom
never achieved greatness
and cannot strive to reclaim and expand
upon my past successes

Pretend like nations were
not Birth from my womb
act as if you did not notice my image
when you went to plunder my people’s tombs..
pyramids and magnificent structures
all of those which your lack of understanding
causes you to refer to them as
the World’s Great Wonders

So, go on and wonder
ponder
openly attempt to understand
my confidence
my ethereal essence
my rejection of patriarchal religion
and
my embrace of the divinity within me
my embrace of spirituality
why I smile at my reflection
when I am viewing the goddess within
maybe eventually through in depth
contemplation
you will finally realize

That no matter what you do
or choose to verbalize
I will continue to view life with my Third Eye
walk with my head held high
knowing that her-and-history
begins with me
was made possible because of me

So, you will never dash my pride
Never slow my stride
I am a BLACK WOMAN
The most ancient being
Life begins with me
MOTHER EARTH birth me
and the MOST HIGH beings created me
