Clipped Wings aka The System

by Sharon Thomas Cash

Gather your thoughts and look inside yourself
Consider what’s important, is it your health or your wealth

Have you looked even deeper at the intents of your heart?
Can you find your spirit? No. Where and when did it start.

They said soar like an eagle. But my wings had been clipped.
I paid my debt to the penal system, to the blood and the crips.

The flags of that nation are the red and the blue.
I was taught and I learned just what I could do.

I’ll take yours so I can get mine.
Doesn’t matter I’m always doing time.

Did you expect me to soar, to be the boy next door?
When every day of my young life was an all out war.

It was a fight to the finish and I was losing the battle.
I use to ask myself does my life really matter?

No turning my cheek holding a gun in my hand.
I needed a running start to help me get off the ground.
From the floor to the door, clipped wings won’t let me soar.

Back in the day they called it “the man.”
I thought it was an excuse but now I understand.

Look within and find your spirit self.
Dust it off, polish it and let it shine.
You don’t need those wings to fly.
You can dwell in the secret place of the Most High.

He will hide you under the shadow of his wings.
There you will discover why the caged bird sings.
