67 TIMES

by Sharon Thomas Cash

I was listening to the news the other day
I almost didn’t believe what I heard them say
A mother was crying, people were marching with signs
The news report was police had shot her son 67 times
67 TIMES, what was going through their minds?
67 TIMES, there’s no reason, what was his crime?
I tried to dismiss it, but it wouldn’t go away
They said he was acting strange, they said he had a gun
That he was mentally unstable and harassing everyone
67 TIMES, how long did it take
67 TIMES shot bullets of hate
The coroner removed 20 bullets or so, and left the rest
The shock pain and horror his mother must have felt in her chest
When she saw his bloody body, and had to lay her son to rest
67 TIMES, I can’t say it enough
67 times, 67 times, 67 times, 67 times…
67 TIMES, an ugly picture in my mind
