Words

by Carmen S. Hill

Words can mean everything to persons of all kinds
They can brighten the nights and make your heart shine
They can lift up your spirits, turn January into May
Turn all sorts of oddities into things bright and gay
For a child they can make all the difference in his day
Turn his whole life into fantasy or play
Where encouragement is needed they get the job done
Allowing him to continue with his play and his fun
Even with all the good they can do
They can cause a lot of harm too
You have to be careful about the things that you say
Or feelings can be hurt and good friends sent away
A loved one's dream can be broken and destroyed
Because feelings so special are not to be toyed
The words that one say should be cautiously said
Or no companions will he know, alone he'll be instead
True, words can be an asset if used the right way
So don't take them for granted and please watch what you say
If you don't want hurt feelings or warmth to turn to a chill
I suggest you treat language as an art, as a skill
Although you may be angry, keep watch on your tongue
And you won't have words to regret in the days yet to come.
