Not Entirely A Slum

by Carmen

I see beauty when I walk this neighborhood
here I was raised
I played with other children
went to a terrific school
where I learned to compete and make good decisions
I met good people who cared about each other
neighbors who shared gardening ideas
nicely kept lawns
some vacant houses that we claimed were haunted
memories are stirred of
little girls jumping rope
roller skating in the street
sometimes there were fights
everyone always made up
It was fun watching the boys
impressings girls doing wheelies on their bikes
such fun, the basement parties, twenty cents to get in
street corner harmonies
such fun, such beautiful memories
how can they call it a slum
it was nice, it taught me a lot
This was Home.
