Truly Free

by Greg The Poet

Hear the voices of the past sing the spirituals in Sunday school class
Feel the pain from the thorns of the cotton bush
As you kick back in the lounge chair so plush so cush
See the man hanging from the strange fruit tree
Is it merely a dream or our reality
Understand the slave that runs from the master’s leather whip
As you take a flight on your next vacation trip
Touch the deep-hearted wounds of over 400 years of oppression
As the abolishment of affirmative action puts us into a depression
See the joy of the slaves being proclaimed free
As the rebel flag flies high for all to see
And they say we are truly free
