A Black Man

by Darrell Brevard

You try to destroy me
For every reason
The wars I fight with you
Throughout any season
All because the color
Of my skin
When will this mess
Come to an end
You try to take me down
In any direction
But you forget
That I am under God's protection
Hold me back again
You will never
You fail to realize
My mind is too clever
You kick me down
In every way
I return to take your beating
Each and every day
I will never stop fighting
Until this war is won
I keep fighting
For a better life for my son
I think to myself
What did I do to cause this hate
We are dealing
With the lies they create
The lies are coming to an end
The truth is coming out
They try hard to fight it
We understand what they are about
They fail to realize
They fail to understand
Who am I
I am a black man
Who am I
A black man
Who am I
A black man
