Our battle cry is love
Our confusion is ego
We fight the good fight
Trying oh so hard to let go
Past failures, past hurts - playing the fool
But never again we vowed
Until our paths crossed
And instantly we wanted to love again
Felt what we had been missing
Needing love
Ego is a poor substitute for companionship
So we try every day
Giving a little bit more of ourselves
But careful not to give all of us away
Needing each other and wanting to love without abandon
But fearing abandonment all the same
Seeking guarantees, that love cannot promise
Old behaviors that have become our protectors
threaten to kill what is now us
Will we let them go and risk our soul's nudity and exposure
Or give them their walking papers:
selfishness, stubbornness, pride,and ego
We are allergic to vulnerability
But are drowning in too many layers of self
Wanting to be free
But afraid of the freedom love brings
Feeling inadequate and taken for granted at times
Made insecure by past incidents of infidelity
What if it happens again
Again, seeking guarantees that love cannot provide
We look deeply into each other's soul begging for trust
Begging the other to please
Be the One.
