A Lighter Shade of Brown

by B.J. Pike~Bailey

America unsettled, threatened and afraid
I wasn't joyful, but here's what I said
On this horrible day of civil unrest
Black males in this country won't be put to the test

On September 11th and for a short while
There'll be a change in our national profile
Instead of accusing our brothers from town to town
Police will be looking for a lighter shade of brown

Instead of dreads, braids and afros in places urban
Men will be apprehended for sporting a turban
'Nut', 'Bone' and 'Doughboy' can relax I believe
Cos authorities are looking for guys named Habib

Convenience stores aren't convenient this moment in time
For the clerks are now at the firing line
And for a short while, the native Black man
Will be considered A M E R I C A N

They'll roll up their sleeves and work and push
To do whatever thus saith Bush
I hope they enjoy the solace I've found
Now that the bad guys are a lighter shade of brown
