First Look at Beauty

by Bilal Berthony
AKA Brooklyn Poet

The first time that I saw you
I was forced to redefine my terms,
rearrange my perceptions of perfection,
and forget everything that I’ve learned.

So overwhelming was your beauty,
that I stood frozen in awe.
My eyes quickly reviewed your body,
and found not a single flaw.
I must confess that I remained helpless
for at least 10 seconds.
From what I observed,
Baby you’ve got curves
to teach an hour glass a lesson!

Women bake all day in the sun
hoping for a complexion like yours.
Your skin radiates.
Elegance seeps from your pores.

Your essence is that of an Ebony Goddess.
Maybe I’ll call you Isis,
mother of all things,
Goddess of justice and truth.
For the first time that I saw true beauty
was the first time that I saw you.
