I've read his words
Since I was a little boy
Not fully aware
But they gave me joy
Then somebody told me
He once lived here
Writing of "Rivers"
Way beyond his years
He traveled the world
As if it were is duty
To experience life
And chronicle its beauty
Born in Missouri
Cleveland raised
D.C. inspired
Harlem praised
Senegal and Nigeria
Through the Congo rain
Russia and France
And finally Spain
He brought back to America
Fruits of the world
He spread amongst his people
The oyster's pearl
All that he had written
And visited New York to Rome
He never had a place
That he could truly call home
He was my hero
And he became my muse
Thank God for the poetry
That is Langston Hughes
