Out of the Black

by R. Denise Baker

From the ominous depths of my soul
I see a pool of blackness
Running deep and mysterious.

And as I take the brush
To paint the pages of my destiny
Upon the walls of my life,
I see brilliant color
Indigo, crimson, and sunny yellow
Tangerine and warm mahogany
Shine from out of the black.

I see hearts and flowers,
Music, love, joy and peace.
I also see pain
And frustration… tiredness.
Clouds and haze,
And some days nothing but rain
Comes from out of the black.

I see triumph and rejoicing.
I see glorious strides and much pride,
Goals achieved, plans failed
Some defeats and losses, too,
Come from out of the black.

I look at the picture I’ve painted
And as a teardrop falls,
It runs through the pages of my life,
Brilliant color, joy and pain
The losses and the gains
Combine to show their origin
Within my soul
And let me know
That from out of the black
All things work together for my good.
Understood?
