American Bumb

by Cory T. Atherley

American bumb,
Lived for the outdoors across the street
Awaits his next meal every night for "gubment" cheese.
But you don't speak to him
In fear that guilt is by association
Associating with a bumb who can't pronounce
G-R-O-C-E-R-I-E-S.
Waits in line once a month,
For 5 pounds of yellow brick "gubment" delicacy.
His conscience told him..
Don't except handouts if you don't need pity
Don't panhandle on the block if you want your dignity
Don't except handouts if ya worth $20 to your name.
Inner pride made him insane.
American bumb,
He might as well become a slave all over again
Because the proprietor loved to see him dance
and beg
The "gubment" loves to see you dance and beg.
His conscience told him,
Don't except handouts if you don't need pity
Don't panhandle on the block if you want your dignity
Don't except handouts if ya worth $20 to your
name
His inner pride made him insane.
