The Breaking Point

by Anwar Aswad Amir

To watch your children

day after day

While crack-n-cocaine

Are slowly taking them away?

What’s a Mother to do?

What’s a Mother to say?

When she sees them killing each other and going insane.

When she sees them dying in the bloody rain.

When she sees her children,

being flushed down the drain day after day.

When she sees that crack-n-cocaine

Are slowly taking them away?

From business suit

To destitute.

From a Sunday school teacher.

To a public leacher.

She was once debutante, and cute.

She’s all strung out on crack, now a prostitute.

Now our youths are taking cars at a gunpoint!

What’s a mother to do before she reaches the breaking’ point?

Whom does she talk to?

Who do? She tells her troubles to?

What’s a Mother gonna say?

When she sees her child caught up becoming DOA

Another youth killed by a brutal cop!

She has reached the breaking point, and she asked.

"When will this madness stop?"

Who’s gonna help save the children’s life?

Who’s gonna make the right sacrifice?

If we don’t tell them the truth.

Whom are the children gonna listen too?

Lord, what’s a Mother to do?

Before she reaches the breaking point?
