I Sing the Blues

by Alynetta Beck

I sing the blues
when times are hard
when love is wrong
and I've let down my guard

I sing the blues
when they ignore me
when they look at me strangely
when they think I'm crazy

I sing the blues
out in the rain
to hide my tears
to hide my pain

But not only that...

I sing the blues
and I get down
I feel the rhythm
I breathe the sound

I sing the blues
on a real good night
because, don't you know,
the blues is alright

I sing the blues
because I am Black
and it feels good
the rhythm's got my back

When I sing the blues
I can't go wrong
because there is a story
in every song

I sing the blues
because it soothes
then when you take away
all the hip-hop,
be-bop, rap,
r&b, urban contemporary,
etc,
etc.
all you got is...
the blues.

I sing the blues...
