Diamond Life

by Alara Christian

Givin' life the finger
drippin' ice
cold and bold
all out in the open
y'all trippin'
over Pride
wide
as
the gate to Hell.
Treasurin' ignorance
measured
in
carats,
those rocks wrapped 'round your neck
like
millstones
got you hangin'
by
a thread
over a pit unearthed
by
Greed.

What - y'all don't read?!?

Always searchin' for pictures
in
PEOPLE and EBONY
magazines,
you missin' the big one
every time
you look in the mirror!
Terrified screams
ringin'
in your ears
even you can hear
if
you'd pay attention
should make blood boil
and
you recoil
with
rage and plans
to
foil
another diamond-backed rampage.
African Brothers trapped
between
rocks and hard places,
dyin'
to
find
the way to better days,
discover the cost
that
darkness pays
as up above suited others
forever covetin'
ever more of the Mother's land
of
riches
demand demeaning searches
of
every crack
and
crevice.

So who y'all impressin'?

Those that know Truth
can't stand
the sight of you -

publicly bling-blingin'
and
 singin'
'bout diamonds like they be your friends

makes them shake their heads
in
shame.

Black mamas dryin'
Black babies' cryin' eyes
'cause
Black daddies ain't comin' home no more
swear
Harry Winston and DeBeers
got rocks in their heads

and
instead

of
 hearts.
And you don't see nothin' wrong
with
singin' lewd songs
and
gyratin' in thongs
all 'cause you longin' ...
for what? Some triflin' ice,
baby?

Y'all heard the word 'genocide' lately?

And those of you
playin' model-like roles
before
the world
thinkin'
you got it made
'cause
you gettin' paid,
that jewelry you rockin'
ain't doin' nothin' but blockin'
your way
to
that land of Promise
you 'bout to miss
'cause
of
your foolishness.

When
y'all gonna wake up
from
the nightmare you call livin'
and
which you inflictin'
on
the children
who learn from us
by
mimickin'?

When
you gonna learn your lesson
and
just say
'No'!
when it comes to makin' a choice
between
self and Self-destruction?

When
you gonna stop buyin'
into
every. little. thing.
the devil
tries
sellin' you?

Enslaved to racist, materialistic ways
you're shackled
by
your own hand
diggin'
your own grave
savin'
the one behind the scenes
pullin' your strings
from
havin' to.
