My Brother

by Lola Akua Thompson

My Brother...
When I say brother
Take it please as a term of affection
Because regardless of the direction
That this piece may take
I love you
Truly I do
What I am about to share with you
I pray will enlighten your spirit
Impart to you some womanly
Or shall I say human knowledge
And make sure that you hear it
Feel it
Breathe it
For one day my brother this may save your very life
Keep you from losing your woman or wife
Or beating yourself up
Simply because of what you didn't know
Please realize though
That after knowing...
You will never have blindness as an excuse again
Never make ignorance your protector or your friend
See...
I want to let you know...
My brother...
That when woman loves your heart
Most times it is real
Yes there are times when a sister has game
Or is working a deal
For finance or temporary romance
But what I am referring to is when it is
Real and True
From her sweet soul
Never, ever throw her away
Do not toss her like old food
That your are finished eating
And no longer have use for
Cause just like your momma told you
When you were young
When you waste food,
There are starving people
Who would love to have what you have
Somewhere in this world
There is a starving man out there
Who would die for what you have
For just a small taste of her love
And if you waste her
It kills a little part in her
My brother...
If you are not interested in her
And what she brings to your world
Be gentle and caring
Be honest
Be open
Let her know that you are not ready
Cause contrary to what you have been taught
Or mis-led to believe
She is strong
She can take it
What she can not take
What she will not tolerate
Are your deceptions
She should not have to bear lies
Just so you can continue
To have multiple day erections
And choices for free home cooked meals
And supportive loving gestures
My brother...
That woman is a person,
She hurts
Just like you
Don't minimize the dirt
That you do
Don't call on your dual personality skill
To turn on and off at will
Just to satisfy your flesh
Because in doing that
You are burning hers
You are crushing her very being
You know how it feels
When you are kicked in your manhood
You know how it knocks you to your knees
How it makes your brain freeze
How it knocks the wind
Out of you body
And paralyzes you
For a period of time
My brother...
Do me a favor
The next time your less brilliant head below
is turned around
And you have someone at home
Whose love you have found
Remember that feeling
Cause that's how your
lying and cheating
Your inconsiderate machismo
Masquerade
Will slice her soul
So, my brother...
If you have any respect
For your grandma
Mother
Sister
Daughter
Or niece
Don't block me out
Open your heart, take a deep breath and
Embrace this piece
